Bateman Case Study Competition

Team Member
Aug. 2019 - May 2020 | Gainesville, FL

The Bateman Competition, founded by Carroll J. Bateman in 1973, is PRSSA’s premier national case study competition for public relations and communications majors. Students are challenged to apply classroom education and internship experiences to create and implement a full public relations campaign. The focus of the competition is to creatively and strategically implement a month-long campaign that strives to solve a local issue in the community with a partnering client. More than 75 collegiate teams enter the competition each year.

This competition gave me experience with conducting primary and secondary research, strategy development, event planning, outreach and pitching, documentation and evaluation, and much more.

The 2019-2020 Bateman client was the U.S. Census Bureau. To prepare for the competition, we conducted IRB-approved research using Qualtrics surveys, focus groups and interviews with industry professionals to create research-based goals, objectives, strategies and tactics for the campaign. I handled the coordination of all focus group protocol and analyzation.

Then, we planned and implemented a grassroots campaign driven by a strong, research-based digital strategy to increase student and renter participation in the 2020 Census.

Despite COVID-19 causing us to pivot our campaign completely online, we exceeded our first and second objectives by almost 351% and 1,086%, respectively; we reached nearly 30,400 students through digital and grassroots efforts and approximately 80,00 residents through traditional media. More than 21,000 Gainesville members participated in the 2020 Census by March 20, exceeding our third objective by 3,002%.

Out of 57 entries, UF’s We Deserve Better campaign was awarded second place.

  • Shadow and substitute for Managing Director during PRSSA Executive Board meetings, Alpha Director meetings and client meetings and calls.

I assisted in managing a firm of approximately 40 student members divided into five account teams and one in-house team. Due to new recruitment and client relations strategies, applications and paying clients have doubled from 2018, which had doubled from the year previous as well. I directed and advised two of those account teams: Tokyo 2020 Study Abroad and the UF CJC PR Department's diversity campaign.

In 2018, I participated in the organization's rebranding campaign, its first since its establishment. I helped to develop a new website, social media, logo, mission and value statements, and all internal documents. Because of this, student member applications rose 172% and resulted in double the applications compared to the 2017-2018 academic year. The number of paying clients has doubled as well. In 2019, the number of member applications and paying clients doubled as well.
